BIG Iowa Partner launch event is Wednesday, May, 21.
The District is planning a BIG event for Wednesday, May 21. The ‘BIG Partner Launch’ will be to celebrate the school districts and organizations that have come together to support the Iowa Big Program. A ribbon-cutting and program will be held at 4 p.m. at the NewBo City Market in Cedar Rapids. There will then be opportunity for community members and interested students to visit with BIG teachers and staff members.
Iowa BIG allows high school students to expand their learning opportunities outside the traditional classroom for part of the school day. The innovative program is intended to provide more options for students and families and to engage the community in education.
The program is focused on the concepts of learner co-designed coursework, with students targeting their learning before lessons are developed; a demonstrated ability in both common content standards and 21st century skills; a focus on the development of skills necessary to work in diverse situations and relationships; design thinking to help students better understand how content, problems, and solutions are related; and connecting students to the community via resume-building projects and experiences.
Iowa BIG has its home base at the Vault co-working space in downtown Cedar Rapids. You can learn more about the program here.
