Cold and Flu Season

'Tis the season... for colds, respiratory flu, and stomach flu. Prevention is the best way to avoid the spread of these community-based illnesses.

Frequent handwashing, covering coughs and sneezes, and keeping your child home when they have a fever, severe cold symptoms, active vomiting and/or diarrhea is the key to limiting the spread to others.

If individual schools experience unusually high numbers of illnesses, school nurses implement a response plan that includes reporting to Linn County Public Health, Iowa Department of Public Health and our District's custodial department. Each of our schools reports illness-related absences to LCPH on a daily basis and to the State if illness-related absences reach 10% or more. During that scenario, our custodial staff follows special IDPH disinfection guidelines on a daily basis until illness rates return to low levels. LCPH would help us determine if there would be a need for a school to close due to illness. Stay well and happy holidays!
