Students at Nixon Elementary School became after-school chefs as part of the Nixon Cooking Club. The activity was open to students in grades 2-5.
Throughout the fall program, weekly sessions began with a story related to a healthy snack. When “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” was read, students created snacks that resembled the book characters by using fresh fruits and vegetables. The program ran throughout the fall.
This was the first year for the Cooking Club and it was so popular that there were two groups, each with about 40 participants. Plans are already in place to offer the after-school program again next fall, according to Jennifer Goebel, teacher and club coordinator.
