Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad and Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds visited Arthur Elementary School on Sept. 28 to help dedicate a “Buddy Bench” on the school playground. The Bench was the idea of student Isaac Taylor who began working last year to raise money to install them on several school playgrounds in Cedar Rapids as a way to foster friendship.
Students are encouraged to go to the Buddy Bench during recess if they are feeling alone or left out and want to meet a new friend. Isaac, now a middle school student, wrote the Governor’s Office about his project last summer. The entire Arthur student body joined in the dedication celebration.
Buddy Benches have also been located at Cleveland, Hiawatha, Taylor, and Truman elementary schools, and at the Boys and Girls Club at the Polk Alternative Education Center.
