Grant Wood Legacy Showcased

The Mourner's Bench, was created by Grant Wood shortly after McKinley School opened in 1922. The bench was placed outside the principal’s where students contemplated their actions while they waited to speak to the principal.

Before ‘American Gothic’ and ‘Young Corn’ were painted, renowned American artist Grant Wood served as a teacher in the District. Memorabilia from his tenure in the classroom are permanently on display at McKinley Middle School and provide an excellent opportunity for students to learn about the artist and to share the story with community members.
