Iowa College Tour Increases Awareness

March 4, 2016 08:30 AM

The Cedar Rapids Community School District will host the third annual Iowa College Tour March 13-20. During the week-long tour, participating students will visit colleges and universities taking part in tours and meeting with admissions staff.

Twelve students participated in the first tour during the 2013-14 school year. Student participants were chosen by an application process which include teacher recommendations and an essay reviewed by a selection committee composed of counselors, Manager of Student Equity, and Director of Learning Supports. The success of the first tour led the District to expand participation in 24 students last year. Another 24 students will participate this spring.

The Iowa College Tour provides an opportunity for students to increase their awareness of the opportunities of HBCUs. The 2015-16 tour will include visits to Central State University, West Virginia University, North Carolina A&T State University, Saint Augustine University, Fayetteville State University, South Carolina State University, Claflin University, Albany State University, and Florida A&M University.

The tours are a resource as students continue to explore college and career opportunities.
