Several support organizations have joined forces to provide school supplies to families in need in Cedar Rapids. "CR Packs for Kids" is a collaboration between The Salvation Army, HD Youth Center, NW Neighbors Neighborhood Association, Tanager Place, Freedom Festival, Sam's Club, Walmart, and HACAP. The group hopes distribute 2,000 back packs.
"As we are seeing District families in our Metro Care Connection clinics we hear how difficult it is with costs as students come back to school each year," noted Kim Rimmer, District school-based health services specialist. "Families with two or three children struggle to find money for these needed school supplies. We appreciate the efforts of these organizations in supporting students and families."
The items most needed include crayons, block erasers, supply boxes, watercolors, scissors, glue sticks, dry erase markers, boxes of thick & thin markers, pocket folders, wide lined and college rule spiraled notebooks, composition notebooks, boxes of colored pencils, rulers, red pens, highlighters, index cards, and blue or black pens. Backpacks would also be appreciated.
Distribution of the bags will be on Saturday, Aug. 17 from 8 to 11a.m. at the Salvation Army (1000 C. Ave NW) to anyone who could use assistance with purchasing school supplies for their children. Registration cards can be picked up prior to this day at the NW Neighbors Neighborhood Association, The Salvation Army, Olivet Neighbor Mission, St. Vincent DePaul, Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, Sam's Club, Freedom Festival, and HACAP (1515 Hawkeye Drive Hiawatha). Pre-registration is not required but unaccompanied children will not be eligible to receive back packs and supplies; a parent/guardian must register and pick up the supplies.
