Mary Bunn Wins 2019 Philip Sehmann Excellence in Teaching Award

Congratulations to Wilson Middle School's, Mary Bunn for winning the 2019 Philip Sehmann Excellence in Teaching Award from the Northeaster Bandmasters Association (NEIBA)

The award is given in memory of Mr. Sehmann who had a highly distinguished career as Director of Bands at Crestwood Community Schools. This award is presented to those individuals who meet the criteria of excellence, dedication and commitment to the value of instrumental music education in our schools.

From the NEIBA, " Mary Bunn is in her 36th year of teaching instrumental music and currently enjoys working with sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students at Wilson Middle School in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.  Originally from Michigan, she began her career as an instructor with the Northern Aurora Drum and Bugle Corps.   She also directed a 5th through 12th grade band program in the Detroit area.  Mary earned her Bachelor of Music Education degree from Concordia Teachers College in River Forest, Illinois and her Master of Education at Coe College, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.  During her undergraduate years, she had the opportunity to perform with the Chicago Civic Orchestra and other ensembles in the Chicago area.  Her main instrument is percussion and she was a member of the Cedar Rapids Municipal band for over 10 years, as the mallet percussion player.  Among her guest conducting experiences was the Coe College Honor band in 2014."
