The District formally unveiled the Metro High School STEAM Academy, as well as renovations made to the high school’s Media Center, with a ribbon cutting and community open house event Oct. 15.
The Metro STEAM Academy is focused on the innovative redesign of classroom spaces that counter the traditional classrooms in favor of lab space for student innovation. These include a science and engineering lab, industrial wood shop, incubator space, and exhibition/presentation space. These classrooms have been redesigned with a focus on technology-rich, collaboration, and flexibility.
The event also highlighted the new PROPACT Program, a cooperative effort between Metro High School and the Built By Prosorganization that is intended to increase job opportunities and economic growth in Cedar Rapids through early exposure to apprenticeship programs.
“Students who are interested will enroll in the Metro STEAM program, where they will participate in a project-based learning environment,” explained Carlos Grant, Principal. “Students have the opportunity to make an informed decision about whether or not an apprenticeship is the right choice for them and will create valuable networking connections to utilize after graduation. Students who decide the apprenticeship career pathway is the right choice for them will already have some experience, training, and the prior knowledge to help them be successful for continuation into a full apprenticeship program.”
