Lottery Application Process:
The Lottery is a computer generated, random process used to select and accept students who live outside of the magnet neighborhood attendance zone. Students who live in the magnet neighborhood attendance zone do not need to enter the lottery to enroll. All CRCSD students are eligible to apply for the magnet school lottery. Students applying for placement in a magnet program must enter the lottery by completing an online application. In addition, applicants from outside of the Cedar Rapids Community School District may apply and must also complete and submit Open Enrollment paperwork by March 1st.
Submitting Open Enrollment paperwork does not bind you to attending a school in the CRCSD.
CRCSD Magnet School Lottery Placements:
To better serve all students, families will be asked to identify their first and second choice for a magnet seed. All efforts will be made to place students in their first choice, however it is important to remember that this may not be possible given the level of interest in the magnet schools. It is also important to remember that students who live in the attendance zone are guaranteed a seat in their neighborhood attendance (magnet) school.
The following placements will be applied when running the lottery pending availability of seats:
Priority placement is given to applicants who currently attend (at the time of the magnet school lottery) a magnet school and who have moved out of the magnet school attendance zone. (They previously lived in the magnet neighborhood attendance zone.)
Sibling Legacy Placement
Priority placement is given to applicants to have a sibling(s) who attends a magnet school (K-5 for elementary, 6-8 for middle) at the time of the lottery will receive sibling legacy preference in the lottery. .
Open Enrollment Placement
Priority placement is given to students (in grades K-8) who live in the Cedar Rapids Community School District attendance zone and currently attend a school out of the District. 10% of lottery placements will be reserved for these applicants. If a CRCSD student who currently enrolls out of the district does not receive a priority placement, they will then receive placement based on applicant number.
Applicant Priority Placement
After the first 10% of lottery placements are made through the Open Enroll out of CRCSD/reside in the CRCSD and enroll in a school outside of the CRCSD priority placement (or all students who qualify are placed, whichever comes first) remaining lottery students are placed based on their applicant number.
Sibling Priority Placement
The lottery is a family lottery. Sibling Priority Placement is given to siblings of students who have received placement at a magnet school. Brothers and sisters of magnet school students who live at the same address and share at least one biological or legal parent have sibling priority placement in the same magnet school building as their sibling pending grade level availability. There is no guarantee, however, that siblings will be placed together.
Non-CRCSD Applicant Placement
If any open seats remain after all CRCSD lottery applicants are placed in the lottery and open Lottery seats remain, Non-CRCSD applicants will be placed based on their applicant number and grade level seat availability. The same sibling priority placement applies.
Magnet School Attendance Zone Residents
If you are a parent of a student who already attends Johnson STEAM Academy, Kenwood Leadership Academy or Roosevelt Creative Corridor Business Academy and/or currently live in these schools’ attendance zone, you DO NOT need to apply for the Lottery.
Parents will be notified of Lottery results after March 22, 2018. Parents will be notified of their child(ren)’s acceptance into the magnet school through the lottery software. Parents will have 72 hours to accept their child(ren)'s placement. Upon acceptance, registration information will be sent. Acceptance letters and registration materials are due back to the magnet school you where you are accepting the lottery seat. Magnet school registration materials are due by March 31, 2018 by 4:00 p.m. online or at the magnet school. After this date, if there are Lottery seats remaining, students in the applicant pool will be placed in the remaining open Lottery seats.
