Grant Wood’s 1937 Study for Tree Planting Group – a charcoal on paper - is now on display in the District’s Dave Benson Art Gallery, located in the Educational Leadership and Support Center (ELSC). Staff from the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art helped to install the new exhibit.
The piece from the District’s art collection shows Wood working through his idea to take a detail from his 1932 painting Arbor Day(pictured) and expand this detail into a fully fleshed-out lithograph for Associated American Artists (AAA). Tree Planting Group was the first lithograph completed by Wood of the 19 that he eventually created for AAA, and the only one to use a vignette from a previous painting as inspiration.
The District’s art gallery is open to the community during the regular business hours of the ELSC at 2500 Edgewood Road NW.
