The District has determined that Taylor Elementary School will not be repaired in time to open during the 2008-09 school year. The school, located at 720 7th Avenue SW, suffered serious damage in the June flooding disaster.
During the flooding, three feet of water rose on the first floor. The first floor is still being cleared and cleaned; the building will then be under repair and renovation. Affected school records and legal documents were recovered to be cleaned and restored.
The flood waters did not reach the second floor of the building. Since the first floor will not be accessible until repairs are complete, however, all grade levels are affected. Taylor students and staff members will be relocated for the 2008-09 school year to other District schools. A process is being developed to determine locations. Long term plans for Taylor have not been determined.
“Our main priority is to make sure that every student has a supportive learning environment and each staff member is serving the needs of the children of the District,” noted Dr. Dave Markward, Superintendent.
“This is a very emotional time for our families and staff,” added Brian Christoffersen, Principal. “We know that everyone will work together to meet the challenge.”
The District is currently working to contact all families affected by the flooding. Taylor families can call 558-2477 with questions.
Classes will begin for all District schools on Tuesday, August 26.
