As part of a new social studies curriculum, seventh grade students at Taft Middle School have become very familiar with the Civil War era.
The students began researching the 1846-1877 time period in early January and are currently making class presentations. Each student will present research to the class on one of several topics related to the war era. Students will focus on such themes and personalities as Abraham Lincoln, the Battle of Bull run, the Emancipation Proclamation, the Battle of Gettysburg, and the reconstruction.
Presentations will include power points, story cloths, posters, tri-folds, costumes, and displays of actual items from the time period.
“Students must give their presentations in first person and have multiple visuals,” explained Lori Tonsfeldt, teacher. “The students will make their presentations in front of their classmates and the rest of the class must take notes on each project presented.
“Projects such as this are wonderful for teaching students about researching, making sure they document everything they use, speaking in front of an audience, and learning about history far deeper than they ever could through a single textbook,” added Tonsfeldt. “The creativity and thinking skills that go into these projects are phenomenal.”
