The Metro Care Connection was recently awarded $3,500 to support its Emergency Health Fund (EHF). The funding came from Hills Bank.

The Emergency Health Fund provides medications and specialized medical needs to District students in need. This includes students who may be temporarily without finances for medical needs. This fund is supported by donations and grant writing. In the 2007/2008 school year $7,478 of the EHF was used for medications, specialist visits, dental and vision needs as well as lab tests and medical supplies.

“These services have in previous years been well-utilized and with the flooding and the subsequent consequences of this disaster, we anticipate a drastic increase in the number of students who will request and benefit from the Emergency Health Fund,” explained Kim Rimmer, Program Assistant. “We are very grateful to have the support of the community with these efforts and so appreciate the contribution made to the program by Hills Bank.”

The Metro Care Connection has provided school-based health care services to District students since 1998. Health care, mental health counseling and substance abuse counseling are available for students and their siblings if the family is without access to other services. The program is a partnership between the District, The Abbe Center, the Area Substance Abuse Council, and local grants and gifts. Metro Care Connection is staffed by three Pediatric Nurse Practitioners, seven mental health therapists, and three substance abuse counselors.
