Repair work is now underway at Taylor Elementary School. The building was one of six District facilities damaged during the June flood. Water levels reached approximately 3 feet in the school. The playground was also submerged for a period of time.
Because of the extensive damage, classes at the school were suspended for the current year and students and staff were relocated to other District buildings. The District intends to reopen the school for the 2009-2010 school year and construction crews are fast at work to meet that schedule.
As part of the demo work in December, crews from Garling Construction cut concrete to update plumbing, pulled large electrical lines, and removed damaged studs and tiles. Reframing is now underway and hot water plumbing lines are being added. The schedule calls for all interior repair work to be complete by May 29.
"So far, the milestone schedule for reconstruction of Taylor is on schedule," noted Mary Ellen Maske, Executive Administrator of Elementary Education. "We remain optimistic that we will be able to meet the deadline for completion at this point in time."
Once the interior of the building is repaired, classroom and office furniture will be moved in, along with needed learning materials. Staff and students will be welcomed back to Taylor in August.
