Enrollment Opportunity Scheduled
for Taylor Re-Opening
Reconstruction is now under way at Taylor Elementary School, 720 7th Avenue SW. The school was damaged in June when flood waters reached approximately 3 feet in the school. Classes were suspended at the building for this year and students and staff members were relocated to other District schools. The school is scheduled to reopen with the start of the 2009-2010 school year on August 25.
Over the next several months, there will be multiple opportunities for families to register their children to attend Taylor for the 2009-2010 school year. All students who will be in kindergarten through fifth grade next year will need to enroll or “sign up” to attend Taylor in 2009-2010. The first of these enrollment events is set for Friday, February 6 from 1-5 p.m. at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena, 1100 Rockford Rd. S.W.
Highlighted below are some general guidelines for enrollment at Taylor:
- All students who live in the Taylor attendance area may either register to attend Taylor in 2009-2010 or may apply for a permit out to another school by following the usual District parameters for permits.
- Students who attended Taylor on permit in 2007-08 will be allowed to remain on permit for 2009-2010 but must ‘re-enroll.’
- Students who permitted out of Taylor in 2007-08 may continue to use those permits out in 2009-2010. While permits out to Cleveland, Harrison, and Grant/Wilson from 2008-09 will be honored, transportation will not be provided to Cleveland and Harrison; transportation to Grant/Wilson will return to pre-flood status.
- Students that attended Taylor in 2007-08 and now reside outside the Taylor attendance area will be granted a permit to return (paperwork must be completed and transportation will not be provided).
“We want the enrollment process for the transition back to Taylor School to be as clear and simple as possible for everyone,” noted Dr. Dave Markward, Superintendent. “This is an exciting step in the recovery for the Cedar Rapids Community School District.”
