The District recognized 52 formal partnerships and nearly 100 other collaborations with area businesses and organizations during the School and Community Partnership Recognition February 4. Several of the recognized businesses were thanked for their assistance to the District during and following the June flood disaster.
The annual program included partnership displays, student entertainment, comments from Superintendent Dave Markward and Board of Education President Melissa Kiliper-Ernst, a video presentation, and the introduction of the partners and special service honorees.
“Partnerships between our schools and area businesses represent a joint investment in education,” noted Marcia Hughes, Community Relations Supervisor and coordinator of the event. “Our schools have cultivated successful relationships with for-profit businesses, non-profits, agencies, and local organizations, each collaboration pursuing the goal to directly and positively strengthen the learning environment for students and staff.”

The partnership event also recognized the dedicated contributions of Al Smith, as District ambassador. Smith served as a member of the Board of Education from 1995–2002. A passionate advocate for students, he worked tirelessly during his Board tenure to support public education and exemplify the District mission of Excellence for All. Smith has continued to promote education and support student needs by connecting area businesses and professional organizations with schools. Working with the Volunteer Services Program and Community Relations Department, he has facilitated numerous collaborations that enrich the learning environment for all students and staff.
“Mr. Smith embodies the spirit of volunteerism,” said Hughes “Our entire District community has been strengthened by his dedicated efforts and we are proud to recognize his contributions.”
