Jefferson High School’s Project Lead the Way Program hosted an “Exploring Engineering” event as part of National Engineers Week. The evening seminar included demonstrations of the various fields of engineering, as well as hands-on activities. The engineering fields of biomedical, civil, material, software, and mechanical were represented by some 20 companies and 25 presenters. More than 150 students participated.

“The demonstrations included Iowa State University’s solar powered car and the University of Iowa’s Biomed Oreos Demonstration,” explained Lisa Digman, teacher. “This was an ideal opportunity for students to become enthused about pursuing engineering as a career choice as well as other STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) fields.”

Project Lead the Way, or PLTW, is a national program that uses hands-on activities based on real-world engineering projects.
