As part of an ongoing effort to increase diversity awareness, Kennedy High School staff members engaged the entire school community in selecting a single image to convey the message. A diversity poster contest invited students from all grade levels to enter original art work that focused on cultural diversity and tolerance. More than 30 student artists responded. A staff committee narrowed the field to six for on-line voting by students and staff.
When the votes were in, a design by Cheyanne McGrail, senior, topped the list. Her poster was sketched and then modified using computer added design, incorporating traditional as well as technological design skills.
“One of our action research goals at Kennedy is to reduce bullying and improve socialization,” explained Cary Beatty, teacher and action research team member. “While putting up a poster won’t eliminate bullying entirely, the coming together around a single idea, which occurred in the course of this contest, will certainly be a starting point. The committee was very pleased at the number of students who took an interest in the contest and at the universal appeal of Cheyanne’s artwork. The ART team believes the artistic and social value of the poster will make it worth displaying throughout the District.”
In addition to being displayed throughout Kennedy, McGrail’s poster will be duplicated for distribution across the District.
