Students at Kennedy High School may not notice any difference inside the classroom but underground, a geothermal system is producing heat as they study. The District received a rebate check from Interstate Power & Light Company (IPL), an Alliant Energy company, for its proactive efforts in reducing energy usage. To recognize the District for its commitment to energy efficiency, Alliant Energy presented the Board of Education with a $100,861 custom rebate check. Alliant Energy’s custom rebate program is available to commercial users.

As part of the custom rebate program, a geothermal unit was installed inside Kennedy High School, replacing a chiller and a gas boiler. The system will help to decrease energy consumption at the high school by 86,272 kilowatt hours annually. The cost of the project was more than $4 million.

“Cedar Rapids Schools has been very proactive in energy efficiency,” said Jennifer Horning-Strategic Account Manager, Alliant Energy. ”The installation of the geothermal system will allow the school to not only reduce energy usage, but increase indoor comfort and reduce maintenance costs.”

In addition to lowering its energy bill and receiving an extra cash incentive from Alliant Energy, the school district is also doing its part to reduce its environmental impact. By installing a geothermal system at the high school, the District will avoid more than 62 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions each year. This is equivalent to removing about 12 passenger vehicles from Iowa roadways or planting 14 acres of trees.

“We are delighted to accept the rebate check from Alliant Energy for the Phase 1 geothermal update at Kennedy High School,” noted Dr. Dave Markward, Superintendent. “Through the years, Alliant has been a wonderful partner with the Cedar Rapids Community School District. We look forward to continuing a partnership that serves our school and greater community so well.”
