Roosevelt Middle School students recently pitched in to help the Cedar Rapids Public Library set up a new location at Westdale Mall. The student volunteers spent a Saturday afternoon helping to move books from an upper level store front to a larger downstairs location.
The downtown public library was flooded in June when river water rose to seven feet on the first floor, completely destroying some 160,000 items, including the adult and young adult collections, reference materials, public access computers, and a computer lab. The Children’s Department, located on the second floor, was not damaged. The library is now operating out of store fronts at Westdale Mall, known as the “Bridge.”
Roosevelt students have also volunteered during the school year doing yard work in flood-affected areas of the community. They are currently working to raise funds to help rebuild the flooded Theatre Cedar Rapids.
“The students involved have learned valuable skills,” explained Jennifer Hamos, teacher. “They have learned what it takes to come together for a like cause. They have worked on interpersonal skills and they have gained the personal satisfaction that comes from knowing they are helping community members in need.”
