District students will be able to extend their learning environment to include additional cultural and educational venues as a result of the Cedar Rapids Community Schools Foundation’s Using the Community as Learning Laboratory Program.

"Educational field trips serve as a way to bring learning to life as children experience history, the arts, and science first hand," noted Amy Geiger, Foundation Development Director.

A total of 33 grants were awarded, benefiting 1,620 K-12 students. Field trip sites include the Indian Creek Nature Center, Wickiup Hill, Theatre Cedar Rapids, Camp Courageous, African American Museum, Hoover Library and Museum, the Devonian Fossil Gorge, the MacBride Raptor Center, the Edgar Wibble Puppet Theatre performance, the Iowa Children’s Museum, and the State Capital.

Grants were awarded to Cleveland, Coolidge, Garfield, Grant, Harrison, Hoover, Madison, Monroe, Nixon, Truman, Van Buren and Wright elementary schools; Harding, McKinley, Roosevelt, and Taft middle schools; Jefferson, Kennedy and Washington high schools; the District's Home School Assistance Program; The Taft Alternative School; the Bertram/Four Oaks Program; and the District's Transition Center Program.

The Foundation’s field trip program is funded through proceeds from the annual CHAIR-ished Memories Silent Auction event and from direct contributions.
