The three second grade classrooms at Jackson Elementary School recently wrapped up a service project to raise funds for Kids Against Hunger. The outreach aligns with the grade level social studies curriculum theme of needs and wants.

“We collected quarters through reading logs, chores, and bake sales, raising $800,” explained Bridget Castelluccio, teacher. “The students understood that each quarter raised would help to feed one hungry child.”

The funds were used to purchase food package ingredients. These nutritiously-balanced food packages were originally developed by food scientists at Cargill, Pillsbury, General Mills, and ADM. The students worked with representatives from the Kids Against Hunger organization to put together more than 550 bags.

“The students were ecstatic to realize that their efforts were going to help feed more than 3,300,” Castelluccio added.
