The Cedar Rapids Community School District is pleased to announce that Dr. Gary O’Malley has been named Associate Superintendent. He will replace Jay Marino who is moving to a superintendent’s position in Illinois.
O’Malley currently serves as assistant professor of curriculum and instruction at Illinois State University, where he teaches graduate courses in curriculum, assessment, instruction, and program evaluation. He has also taught undergraduate courses in literacy, instructional strategies, and classroom management. At ISU, O’Malley has been recognized by the Student Education Association with an Outstanding Faculty Award. He has also served as a state site reviewer for the National Center for Educational Accountability.
O’Malley previously served as principal of University High School on the ISU campus; deputy state director of the Illinois North Central Association of Colleges and Schools; director of instructional services for the Freeport Illinois School District; and director of curriculum for the Maquoketa and Delwood Community School District in Maquoketa and Delmar, IA. He began his career as a teacher in the Galesburg Illinois Community School District.
He earned a BA degree from Luther College, a Masters Degree from Western Illinois and a Ph.D. from the University of Iowa. The District will welcome O’Malley along with new superintendent, Dr. Dave Benson, on July 1.
