A team from Jefferson High School placed 2nd at the National Academic Decathlon Competition, held the week of April 20 in Memphis, TN. With 44,570 points, this marked the best finish ever for an Iowa team.
Braden Hopkins placed third overall in the Varsity Category in Division II. Thomas Shatzer placed second overall in the Scholastic Category in Division II; Shatzer also earned medals in Super Quiz (Gold), Music (Silver), Social Science (Silver), Art (Bronze), and Economics (Bronze). Shatzer won more individual medals at the national competition than any other Iowa high-school student in the history of the event.
Other Jefferson Decathlon team members are Julie Gudenkauf, Jackson Cover, Ryan Marling, Maureen Usher, Clint Downey, Zach Mickelson, and Ben Schwartzhoff. The team is coached by John Wojtowicz.
