McKinley 7th and 8th grade students hosted an International Day early in May to share enrichment projects focusing on human rights issues.
“Participating students first attended the Annual International Day Conference last fall, presented by the University of Iowa,” explained Barb Rhame, teacher. “The focus of the conference is always human rights issues. The students were so moved by what they learned, that they requested the opportunity to pursue this through a PACT class called simply International Day. ”
Throughout the winter and early spring, students continued to discuss the issues before conducting research and assembling presentations. The May presentations focused on human rights issues from around the world. The exhibits were displayed and the students were on hand to present information and to answer questions about their research. A concert was also presented in the auditorium featuring music and original films, as well as short informational pieces about human rights.
“Students worked very hard on the projects and their commitment is certainly an integral part of becoming a world citizen,” Rhame added.
