Serving as a school board member is one of the most important commitments a volunteer can make. Elected board members establish educational goals that help to shape the future of a school district. Candidates generally have a personal desire to help strengthen education. Such motivation is only the beginning of the election process, however.
To better inform those interested in pursing a seat on the school board, the Cedar Rapids Community School District Board of Education is hosting School Board 101 on Tuesday, June 30. The program, presented by current board members John Laverty and Mary Meisterling, is designed to share helpful information with potential candidates and others interested in the school board.
“School Board 101 will be an opportunity to learn more about the process,” explained Laverty. “We’ll explain board members’ roles, identify the board seats that will be up for election this fall, share necessary paperwork and deadlines for running, and allow plenty of time for audience questions.”
School Board 101 will be held on Tuesday, June 30. The program begins at 7 p.m. in the Taft Middle School media center; doors will open at 6:30 p.m. Attendees need not pre-register. Taft is located at 5200 E. Avenue NW.
Nomination petitions for the three open school board seats (District 2, District 3, and At-Large) may be filed between July 6 and July 30. Nomination petitions and Affidavits of Candidacy are available from the Cedar Rapids Community School District Board of Education Secretary, ESC @ Kingston, 907 15th Street SW; the Linn County Auditor’s Office, and online at www.linncounty.org. School board elections will be held on September 8. School board members will be elected to serve four-year terms.
