Polk teachers and staff members welcomed some 215 K-5 students for the start of the 2009-10 school year on July 22. Additional students are expected to enroll during the first few days of class.

The elementary school has operated on a year-round schedule since the 1998-99 school year. However, the building followed the traditional calendar last year because of the flood. The adjusted calendar includes intercessions in the fall and spring, along with a summer break.

The modified calendar was adopted in an effort to increase attendance, improve achievement and decrease discipline issues. Having the building open more consistently during the year not only provides ongoing delivery of instruction, but it also supports the nutritional needs of poverty children and helps to strengthen neighborhood security.

The school year begins for all other District schools on Tuesday, Aug. 25.
