The federal No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act requires schools to assess students annually to determine if they have met achievement goals. If a school does not meet those assessment and achievement goals (termed “adequate yearly progress” or AYP) for two consecutive years, and if the school receives federal Title 1 funds, it is placed on a federal “Schools in Need of Assistance (SINA)” list and subjected to federal sanctions.
A school is named to the SINA list if it a) doesn’t meet 95% participation rate for assessments, b) doesn’t meet student achievement goals, or c) doesn’t meet the attendance rate for elementary and middle schools or the graduation rate for high school.
For the 2009-2010 school year, the following Title I Elementary schools will be designated as Schools In Need of Assistance (SINA): Cleveland, Grant Wood, Harrison, Hiawatha, Hoover, Johnson, Polk, Van Buren, and Wilson Elementary.
An information meeting for parents/guardians of students attending these schools will be held Thursday, August 6, 2009 at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium at Wilson Elementary/Middle School, 2301 J Street, SE.
