Cedar Rapids is among several Iowa communities now being considered for a Blue Zones Project designation. In supporting the City's application process, Dr. Dave Benson, Superintendent, noted, "The District is pleased to support the effort. The Blue Zones Project supports transforming our community into a place where the happiest, healthiest and most productive people live."

The Blue Zones Project is based on a worldwide longevity study to identify common elements of the world's best practices in longevity and well-being. A 2009 pilot project in Albert Lea, Minnesota found residents increased their projected life expectancy by 2.9 years and employers reported a decline in healthcare claims costs and a drop in absenteeism.

Ten Iowa communities will be named next spring as Blue Zone Project sites. Chosen cities will receive assistance in developing and implementing a detailed plan to support healthier lifestyle choices.

The Blue Zones Project is aligned with Governor Branstad's Healthy State Initiative, working to make Iowa #1 in the nation for well-being by 2016. Iowa currently rants 19th. District students and staff participated in the initiative's kick off event, "Start Somewhere Walk," on Oct. 7.
