Metro High School students recently participated in a neighborhood service day with several projects. This seasonal event was introduced in 2010 but community service has long been a focus of the school.
"Since opening its doors in 1974, Metro High School staff has worked with students to instill the spirit of giving and community service," noted Kathy Green, principal. "For the past 24 years, Metro students and staff have assisted St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church and the St. Vincent DePaul Society with the assembly and packaging of hundreds of holiday food boxes that are distributed around the Cedar Rapids area. Last year we expanded our community service projects during the holiday season to others in our Metro neighborhood by adding some additional activities."
The 2011 event included packaging food boxes at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church; working with Metro daycare directors and staff to provide care for infants, toddlers and preschoolers in the Metro Parent-Child Center; creating inspirational jewelry display cards to display jewelry for the Gems of Hope a nonprofit organization; sharing time with residents at the Irving Point assisted living facility; volunteering at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore; designing seasonal cards for patients of the University of Iowa Children's Hospital; and reading with small groups of students at Grant Early Childhood Center and Taylor Elementary School.
