Two District schools are serving as host sites for the first “Engineering is Elementary” summer learning camp. Facilitated by the Iowa State University Extension, the program is part of the Corridor Stem Initiative (CSI), a regional initiative to increase awareness of science, technology, engineering and math education.
More than 200 youngsters, ages 7 to 12, are participating in the summer day camp to learn more about the engineering design process. Student comments indicate they’re also having a great time.
“This is awesome!” proclaimed one camper at the conclusion of a rocket-building session.
Hands-on learning activities during the six-week program include experiments that build on science and mathematics lessons currently taught in elementary classrooms.
Students will participate in rocket construction and sail boat and wind mill design. In addition, a practicing engineer will visit each camp site to share information about their own education and career.
Camp sessions are being held through the Five Seasons Learning Centers at both Nixon and Viola Gibson elementary schools, as well as locations at other area school districts.
