Reading Event Brings Community Members Into Classrooms

Schools in the District celebrated the 17th annual AMERICA READS Reading is Contagious event on Oct. 18. The local project designed to focus community attention on the importance of reading aloud to young children to increase literacy by inviting community members to visit elementary classrooms to read a favorite story. This annual fall event was introduced in 1997 by the Cedar Rapids Community School District Volunteer Program and was expanded over the next few years to include all metro area school districts.

The purpose of the event is to promote the importance of reading to children throughout the year, demonstrate the importance of learning a lifelong skill, focus attention on literacy in schools, promote diverse community involvement; and demonstrate the joy of reading through collective citizen involvement.

Over 2200 people were guest readers for the 2012 celebration.
