In observance of National School Lunch Week – October 14-18 – schools across the country are celebrating the flavors and foods served in regions of the country. Using the ‘School Lunch Across the USA” theme, meals in the Cedar Rapids Community Schools will feature a different regional theme each day. Featured menus include State Fair Corn Dogs (Midwest Day at the Ballpark), Chicken and Waffles (Southern Style Cooking), Philly Cheesesteak (Mid-Atlantic fare), Taco Salad (Tex-Mex), and Hawaiian Chicken Rice (Aloha from the Island).
“This annual observance is a great opportunity to highlight the important and positive role of school lunches,” said Suzy Ketelsen, Food and Nutrition Manager. “This year’s theme allows us to spotlight regional recipes and ingredients, celebrating how eating a variety and trying new foods can be fun and healthy.”
Over 11,000 lunches are served each day in the Cedar Rapids schools. Nationwide, more than 31 million students enjoy school lunches daily.
