How To Enroll

To enroll your child in the Cedar Rapids Community Schools, complete the following steps:


Preschool Registration:

Registrations are done at the Educational Leadership and Support Center (ELSC), located at 2500 Edgewood Rd. NW, on Monday & Tuesday from 9:00 am –12:00 pm and Wednesday & Thursday from 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm.  The Cedar Rapids Early Learning Office will not be available on Fridays.

Enrollment for your child will only be considered when all forms listed below are completed and on file. 

This includes:

  • Child’s Birth Certificate
  • District Enrollment Form
  • District Home Language Survey
  • Online Preschool Registration
  • Family Income Verification (if the family feels they would be eligible)

The district enrollment formhome language survey form, and the preschool registration form are all available at the ELSC or can be accessed online by clicking on their links.

These forms can be printed off, completed and brought with you when you come in to register or you can complete them at the ELSC. There will be staff available to assist you.

Alternative Kindergarten Registration:

Registrations are done at the Educational Leadership and Support Center (ELSC), located at 2500 Edgewood Road NW.

Mondays and Tuesdays: 8:00 am – noon
Wednesdays and Thursdays: 12:30 pm – 4:00 pm

Parents who are interested in Alternative Kindergarten (AK) should contact their neighborhood school counselor or principal for additional information.

If you are unsure of your neighborhood school, call the Office of Learning and Leadership at 319-558-2247 or use the school boundaries directory.

The district enrollment form and home language survey form are available at the ELSC or can be accessed online by clicking on their links.

Elementary, Middle and High School Registration Grades 1st - 12th:

The district enrollment form can be completed at the school in your attendance area, or can be accessed by clicking on the link.

The district enrollment form and home language survey form will be available on March 4, 2016 at the registration or you can access the forms by clicking on their link.

A complete immunization record is required by state law.  This must be brought in prior to your student’s first day of school.

A physical is required for participation in athletics in grades 7 through 12.

Once you enroll, your new school will contact your former school to forward student records and files.

A valid birth certificate may be required.

Proof of residency is required. (Policy Procedure 602.4c)

For questions regarding 9th thru 12th,  please contact 319-558-2000 and ask for High School enrollment.


Magnet School Registration:

Magnet schools are neighborhood schools. Therefore, if you reside in a magnet school attendance zone, you may enroll your child(ren) in a magnet school by filling out district enrollment form. The district enrollment form can be completed at the school in your attendance area, or can be accessed by clicking on the link.

If you reside outside of a magnet school attendance zone, you need to enter the magnet school Lottery. The Lottery is open to any student in grades K-5. Out of district students are welcomed to apply for a magnet school program. Placement in the Lottery is based on availability for each grade level. Both Johnson STEAM Academy and Kenwood Leadership Academy have a limited number of lottery seats available. Students applying for placement in a magnet program must enter the Lottery by completing an on-line application. Lottery applications are accepted starting Monday, February 15th, 2016 and are accepted online until Friday, April 1st, at 4:00 p.m.
