Magnet Schools

Thank you for your interest in Cedar Rapids Community School District Magnet Schools. A magnet school is a theme-based school providing parent choice in the type of learning environment they want for their child(ren). They are built on the foundation of the magnet school pillars: diversity, innovative curriculum and professional development, academic excellence, high quality instructional systems, and family and community partnerships.

The Cedar Rapids Community School District provides parents with two elementary magnet schools of choice. In the fall of 2015, Johnson STEAM Academy opened up as the District’s first magnet school. In the fall of 2016, Kenwood Leadership Academy will open as the District’s second elementary magnet school. Magnet schools have a focused theme. Johnson STEAM Academy has a theme of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) and Kenwood Leadership Academy has a Leadership theme. Magnet schools use a "hands on - minds on" approach to learning. They use state and district standards but vary the delivery of instruction by teaching the standards within a theme.

The Cedar Rapids Community School District believes in the value of neighborhood schools. Students who live within a magnet school attendance zone are allowed to automatically attend the magnet school. They are not required to enter the Lottery to attend the magnet school serving their neighborhood attendance area. If a student living outside of a magnet school attendance zone wishes to attend a magnet school, they need to enter the Lottery. If a student living outside of the CRCSD wishes to attend a magnet school, they need to apply for Open Enrollment by March 1st and apply for the lottery.
