District elementary schools celebrated the 18th annual AMERICA READS Reading is Contagious event on Oct. 17. The program focuses community attention on the importance of reading aloud to young children to increase literacy by inviting community members to visit elementary classrooms to read a favorite story.
The program was developed and introduced by the District in 1997. Participants range from middle, high school, and college students and parents to school neighbors, senior citizens, business people, and community "celebrities”. The volunteers spent about 30 minutes in a classroom, sharing their love of reading by doing just that—reading a favorite story to a child, a small group of children, or to an entire classroom of students.
