Career Technical Education

The Cedar Rapids Community School District provides a career technical education program that prepares students of all ages to help drive America’s success and vitality. It also allows us to create an educational environment that integrates core academics with real-world relevance.

Cedar Rapids Community School District has seventeen Career and Technical Education (CTE) teachers daily leading over 70 classes with over 1000 students in the CTE service areas of Business & Marketing Education, Family and Consumer Sciences Education, Industrial Technology, and Project Lead the Way (PLTW).

According to "Iowa Career, Industry, & Population Report" (Iowa Workforce Development, 2014), the top ten occupations predicted to have the largest employment growth for 2012-2022 are " the education, health and personal care, computer and math, business and financial, media, and construction major occupational groups.” To meet the demands of Iowa's industries, the CRCSD continues to offer programming in alignment with the industry needs.

Besides the offerings inside the walls of each high school, students can pursue opportunities at one of the three other high schools and through Kirkwood Community College. Students are learning skills that move beyond the general related instruction of employability skills to directly related instruction: from being to work on time to identify the safety procedures and equipment to build a house, as an example.

CTE courses challenge students to move beyond learning to applying their learning through authentic experiences. Projects in classes include creating cell phone applications, developing business plans, elementary tutoring, culinary competitions, building sheds, collaborating with local businesses, troubleshooting all aspects of an electric car team, and much more.
