The mission of the Cedar Rapids Community School District music teachers is to provide essential high-quality music opportunities for all students that foster 21st Century skills, develop life-long learners, and instill an appreciation and joy of music.

Students in the Cedar Rapids Community School District are provided instruction in music by highly qualified teachers who regularly meet as Professional Learning Communities, both vertically and within specific subjects and grade levels, to provide the best possible instruction and musical experiences.  The music curriculum used to guide instruction is closely tied to the National Music Standards and is reviewed and improved regularly.

Elementary students (grades K-5) begin their musical journey with the Rhythmically Moving curriculum, which is folk music designed to aid students as they learn to develop basic timing and musicianship.  This also includes singing, playing instruments including Orff instruments, composing music, moving to music, and learning to read and notate music.

Middle School students (grades 6-8) may begin playing a band or orchestra instrument the summer before 6th grade.  The district provides school instruments for any students with financial need at a nominal cost.  Band, Orchestra, and Choir are all curricular classes and students may also participate in extra-curricular musical activities such as jazz band, show choir, or chamber string ensembles.

The high school (grades 9-12) music programs are nationally acclaimed and offer a wide variety of experiences including concert, marching, and jazz bands; concert, jazz, and show choirs; and string and symphony orchestras.  These programs participate in Iowa High School Music Association affiliated contests and events.  All three high schools also offer Advanced Placement Music Theory.

Students of all age levels in Cedar Rapids are also fortunate to enjoy free performances as part of their music curriculum through partnerships with Orchestra Iowa, the Cedar Rapids Opera Theater, Theater Cedar Rapids, the Red Cedar Chamber Ensemble, and classes through the Eastern Iowa Arts Academy.
