Proficiency is defined by the Iowa Department of Education as the scoring above the 40th National Percentile Rank (NPR) on the Iowa Assessment standardized tests.  The following graphs illustrate the percentage of District students who are proficient. 




The ACT consists of curriculum-based tests of educational development in English, Mathematics, Reading, and Science designed to measure the skills needed for success in first year college coursework.  The composite score is based on all of these tests.  The average ACT composite score of District students who take the ACT is consistently higher than students who take the ACT in the state and nation.




A benchmark score is the minimum score needed on an ACT subject-area test to indicate a 50% chance of obtaining a B or higher or about a 75% chance of obtaining a C or higher in the corresponding credit-bearing college courses, which include English Composition, Algebra, Social Science, and Biology.  The benchmark scores are:

  • 18 on ACT English
  • 22 on ACT Mathematics
  • 22 on ACT Reading
  • 23 on ACT Science

In 2013 ACT increased the reading benchmark from 21 to 22 and the science benchmark from 22 to 23.  The percent of District students ready for college level English Composition, Algebra, Social Science, and Biology is consistently higher than the percentage of students in the state and nation.
