What are the responsibilities of your office or department?
I believe clear, informative communications support the success of our schools and further strengthen our community relations. In my role, I develop communications for multiple stakeholders: student, parent/guardian, staff, media and community partners. The Communications Department utilizes a variety of digital tools to communicate directly with students and parents/guardians via our website, mass email, text and phone. Our goal is to apply technology advancements to district communications, while still maintaining creativity and interpersonal connection.
I oversee the district brand development and upcoming website redesign initiative. Additionally, I spend significant time interacting with the media and view this as a partnership that helps inform the community.
Professional History:
My background includes over 30 years of experience in strategic marketing communications, brand development, media relations, crisis communications, market research, creative writing, and executive communications. I have a specialty in education from working with higher education clients across the country and Canada, and most recently I was the director of communications at the Division of Student Life, University of Iowa.
Fun Facts about Colleen:
Anyone who knows me well is aware of my joy for my family. I love going to visit my adult children, whether that’s in New York City, Phoenix or right here in Cedar Rapids. The Southwest location is a must in the winter and I enjoy going to New York City to watch my daughter’s news broadcast from the wings. In addition, my hobbies include a good workout and then a good book.
