Summer Sports Update on Decisions and Safety Guidelines

May 27, 2020 04:45 PM

This communication is a follow up to the district’s May 21, 2020, email noting Governor Kim Reynolds’ modifications to existing restrictions and guidelines regarding high school baseball and softball.

Based on Governor Reynolds’ May 20, 2020, proclamation and in conjunction with guidance from the Department of Education, Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA), and Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union (IGHSAU), the decisions are as follows:

  • As members of the Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC), Jefferson, Washington, and Kennedy high schools will play approved schedules at the sophomore and varsity level for baseball and the varsity level in softball. Each school will release individual schedules and meet with their players, coaches, and parents/spectators in the coming days.

  • As members of the CRANDIC league, all high schools will also compete at the 9th grade level in baseball and the sophomore level in softball. We will participate in JV baseball and softball as rosters and opportunities allow. Those schedules will be implemented as originally planned with adjustments made regarding the format of games and the number of games played. Those schedules will be adjusted and posted on each school’s individual websites.

Please note, at all levels of play, spectator limitations and safety restrictions will be strictly enforced as agreed upon by the MVC and CRANDIC athletic and district administrators. Public health guidelines will be expected and enforced at all event venues and team practices to protect the health and well-being of our students and staff. The specific guidelines will be shared by the high school athletic directors with teams and fans in organizational meetings and released to the public in the coming days.
